Theoretical and numerical modeling of volcanic processes

 

  • Role of CO2 degassing in the thermal evolution and conduit closure of Mt.Vesuvius after the 1944 AD eruption in order to study the present quiescent state of the volcano and be able to detect future signals of re-activation.
  • Hydrothermal fluid circulation in active volcanic areas and ground deformation, focused on the  Phlegrean Fields area since last bradyseismic event (1981); interpretation of monitoring data and  evaluation of the system conditions iable to influence the parameters measured at the surface; definition of scenarios due to the evolution of hydrothermal systems.
  • Generation and propagation of pyroclastic flows, evaluation of risk variables (dynamic pressure or temperature) and definition of scenarios aimed at vulnerability studies for different types of eruptions at Vesuvius and Phlegrean Fields.
  • High precision digital modeling by Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) integrated with  digital aerial photogrammetry and InSAR analysis, in order to detect morphological changes and for surface monitoring through the comparison of images produced at  different times.
  • Educational and outreach activities on volcanism, on the application of numerical modeling to volcanological studies and, with particular emphasis, on volcanic risk perception and mitigation.
