PNRA - Geodesy and Observatories in Antarctica
INGV Bologna Branch coordinates the sector “Geodesy and Observatories” in the framework of National Research Program for Antarctica. At present, there are three projects started in 2003 and seven in 2004. All the projects are focalized on the continuous and repeated measurements of several physical parameters relevant for the study of low and high atmophere, geodesy, seismology, and geomagnetism. Repeated observations and measurements of physical parameters varying in time play a key role in the detection of the natural contribution to the processes of global changes, and to estimate the effects of the anthropic activity. The meteorological observations and weather forecast are fundamental to plan the in situ research activities, while the geomagnetic, seismological, and geodetic observatories provide data fundamental to model the earth crust deep structure, the tectonic activity, and the present ground deformations. The observations are made at the Mario Zucchelli Station (Terra Nova Bay), at the Concordia Base (Dome C), and at argentinian bases in the Antarctic Peninsula.
