MEDARGO DEPLOYMENTS
November 2005. Last two MEDARGO floats were successfuly deployed in the southern Ionian and Levatine Seas during the EGITTO-1 oceanographic cruise onboard R/V OGS-EXPLORA on 14-16 November 2005. In addition, 3 floats provided by the France Argo program were deployed. They all have the MEDARGO cycling and sampling characteristics. Thank you to the OGS and LOB/CNRS teams for these successful deployments.
As of today, 18 floats are still operating in most areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Since July 2004, the MEDARGO floats have provided more than 1300 CTD profiles. (see http://poseidon.ogs.trieste.it/WP4/table_out.html). That trajectory plots are produced in near-real time at the MEDARGO/TEDC (OGS, Trieste) and can be viewed at the following URL: http://poseidon.ogs.trieste.it/WP4/real_time.html MEDARGO full datasets can be visualized and downloaded in quasi-real time through the ADDC (CORIOLIS, IFREMER, Brest).

DAILY MEDITERRANEAN FORECAST
Since the 30th of September 2005 a new ten days forecast is done every day at the basin scale. A daily bulletin is released at the web page: www.bo.ingv.it/mfs. |
OVER ONE THOUSAND MEDARGO PROFILES!
The MEDARGO floats have provided more than 1000 CTD profiles since the beginning of the program. As of today, 15 units are still operating and we have reached a total of 1008 profiles (see http://poseidon.ogs.trieste.it/cgi-bin/float_table).
Trajectory plots are produced in near-real time at the MEDARGO/TEDC (OGS, Trieste) and can be viewed at the following URL: http://poseidon.ogs.trieste.it/WP4/real_time.html
MEDARGO full datasets can be visualized and downloaded in quasi-real time through the ADDC (CORIOLIS, IFREMER, Brest).

ALADIN/MFSTEP: OPERATIONAL NOTICE
July 2005. Since 29 June from 00 UT network time, ALADIN/MFSTEP switched to the new post-processing domain called " wsea" having the coordinates as follows:
31 North to 46 North; 3 West to 21 East.
The change has applied both for the production 5 days forecast and assimilation starting from 2005/06/29/00.
The name convention of the grib files reflects the fact that this domain covers the western part of the mediterranean basin: there is a letter "w" instead of the previous letter "m" (denoting the whole Mediterranean basin).
The grib file names are then:
MFSTEP_CHMIwp_HHDDMMYY_hhh.grb for the production forecast
MFSTEP_CHMIwa_HHDDMMYY_hhh.grb for the assimilation cycle. |
NEW BROCHURES ARE AVAILABLE FOR MFSTEP PROJECT
July 2005. The new MFSTEP brochure is ready. This brochure describes the main results after the first two years of MFSTEP project. It includes a general project description sheet and 12 sheets dedicated to project issues.

MEDARGO NEW DEPLOYMENTS
During this fall season
six new MEDARGO floats were successfully
deployed in the Mediterranean:
- On 26-Oct-2004, one PROVOR was deployed by the team of Jordi Font in the Alboran
Sea.
- On 12-Nov-2004, one PROVOR was deployed by the team of Antonio Cruzado in the
southern Ionian Sea concurrently with VOS XBT measurements.
- On 6/7-Dec-2004, four APEX were deployed by the team of Isaac Gertman in the
northern Ionian and Levatine Seas concurrently with VOS XBT measurements.
Float trajectory plots are produced in near-real time at the MEDARGO/TEDC (OGS,

BUOY SYSTEM
October 2004
UPDATE
During the cruise on the R/V Urania we upgraded the ODAS Italia 1 to the W1-M3A
configuration by deploying a mooring with CTD and ADCP close to the W1-M3A
mooring site and by installing the new acqusition system with the interfaces
for the Seabird sensors and the new communication system based on a Globalstar
modem.
The mooring was deployed on 22/09/2004.
DATA TRANSMISSION
We are currently using the Globalstar system. The average baud rate is usually
higher than 3.kbps. This means that a single record (about 25KB) is usually
uploaded into 65 seconds. Occasionally we succeeded in reaching also 6 kpbs.
DATA AVAILABILITY
The old configuration (let's say ODAS) worked up to 22/09/2004. All the available
data are available in Medatlas format.
WEB UPDATE
The web site has been update with some photos and the link with the last available
data received from the buoy (starting from the "Product" section)
has been again activated.
Some snapshots from the cruise are in the web site under the section "Doc,
Pictures, & Video" -> September 2004

Regional Forecasts
September 2004 - All the new regional models produce nested current forecasts
! !
Levantine
Basin - Sicily
Channel - NorthWestern
Mediterranean
The models are nested within the new MFSTEP
OGCM based upon the OPA code. They are
initialized every week from the MFSTEP
OGCM using they VIFOP initialization
scheme and they use meterological forcing
from high resolution ALADIN and SKIRON
5 days forecasts. The forecast is relased
with 1 day delay with respect to the actual
start of the forecast. |

Two APEX floats were deployed Friday 26 September
2003 from from RV Garcìa del Cid at the locations:
ID ***35504 15h06 GMT *
41º 44' 02.4" N
03º 43' 00.2" E
ID *35503 15h25 GMT *
41º 45' 00.0" N
03º 43' 00.1" E
They started the first cycle, and the floats were observed while sinking
slowly.
Two PROVOR floats were deployed October 2 2003 in a location close to
where the two APEX are expected to surface few hours later. A full set
of CTD casts is planned for October when the four floats will still be
at surface.
