Bio and Research Interests
Dr. Antonio Costa is a Senior Researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - Sezione di Bologna, Bologna, Italy, where he was also the Managing Director from 2019 to 2022.
He received his PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Bologna, in 2004. During the PhD he spent six months at The Open University, UK, in the framework of the EU Marie-Curie Research Training Network programme "Volcano Dynamics in Relation to Hazards Mitigation Monitoring and Volcano Crisis Response". From 2005 to 2006 he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Earth Sciences Department, University of Bristol, UK, where he was also as a research visitor from 2007 to 2010. From 2007 to 2010 he was a Staff Researcher at the Osservatorio Vesuviano-INGV, Naples, Italy. From 2011 to 2012 he was at the University of Reading, UK, on leave from INGV. From April to July 2015 he was on sabbatical leave at the Earthquake Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, Japan. From May to June 2019 he was a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen, Germany.
He has collaborated with scientists from all over the world on numerous funded research projects and is author of several tens of papers published in refereed science journals. He has been Editor for different scientific journals. For his scientific achievements he has been awarded the IAVCEI Wager Medal in 2013. Since 2021 he has been Member of the Academia Europaea.
From 2011 he has been an International Expert on volcanic hazards for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and from 2012 for the Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN) and the Italian Civil Protection Department. From 2013 to 2016 he was the coordinator of the International Eruption Column Model Inter-comparison Study endorsed by the IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling. From 2016 to 2018 he has been member of the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) Task Force 2020 for determining the future of DCO beyond the end of the decadal program and secure DCO's legacies. From 2017 to 2019 he was Editor in Chief of the scientific journal Annals of Geophysics (INGV).
His main research interests are coupled fluid-rock dynamics of magmatic and volcanic processes; physical properties of magma; fluid flows in hydrothermal systems; volcanic plume dynamics; tephra dispersal and atmospheric transport of volcanic ash; atmospheric dispersion of volcanic and hydrothermal gases; volcanic lakes; lava flow models; volcanic hazards and risk assessment.
